With so much uncertainty in the world right now, staying healthy is on everyone’s mind. As parents our first priority is keeping ourselves and our families safe, by practicing good hygiene and following the new trend of social distancing. Boosting our immune system is just as important by consuming foods that nourish our bodies. One of our favorite ways to do this is with elderberry. Elderberry fruit is packed with vitamins, antioxidants and is thought to provide prevention for colds and flu, respiratory symptoms. There are a variety of ways to consume elderberry and today’s delicious sparkler is at the top of the list!

In addition to the elderberry syrup, you’ll enjoy the benefits of ginger and fresh squeezed lemon. The combination is a trio with medicinal properties and a great way to improve immunity in order to ward off illness, coronavirus, included.
This slightly sweet, tart, and sparkling elderberry beverage, is topped with fresh blueberries for garnish!
MORE ABOUT ELDERBERRY FRUIT & HEALTH BENEFITS
Elderberry fruit comes from the Sambucus tree, produced in different forms for consumption. From lozenges and homemade syrups to gummies and extracts, it’s also rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, C, potassium, folate and iron.
ELDERBERRY SYRUP
Elderberry syrup can be made from scratch or store bought. It is fairly expensive in the grocery store, so it’s worth making at home, if possible! While I do not currently own any Elderberry bushes, my plan is to grow them soon. When I do, I’ll share the recipe for homemade elderberry syrup here on the blog.
ELDERBERRY TASTE
Elderberry syrup is sweet, with fruity tart undertones. It has a similar flavor to grape juice, but with more health benefits. Because elderberry syrup is so sweet, incorporating it into a beverage is a good way to enjoy! Just be sure to follow the recommended guidelines for servings. Children should only consume 1 teaspoon, while adults, can consume up to 2. Please also consult a health physician for more information as I am no doctor and can only share my personal experience with the fruit.
My daughter’s and I each enjoyed an elderberry sparkler (mocktail) yesterday and will be adding that to our weekly immune boosting plan, while at home in isolation. While I did not get the chance to try this beverage with alcohol, I assume it would make an excellent cocktail option, especially considering the current circumstances.
Cheers!
