Red Velvet Hot Cocoa Mix
I’ve had a little obsession with hot cocoa lately, so much so, that I gave away jars as gifts this year during the Holiday Season. Now, with Valentine’s day only a few days away, I wanted to create a new red velvet hot cocoa mix, fitting for the season of love.
RED VELVET HOT COCOA MIX
Sweet and decadent red velvet hot cocoa mix that tastes just like red velvet cake! Easy to layer and assemble to give out as gifts during the holidays.
The inspiration for this mix came from everyone’s love for both red velvet cake and hot cocoa. Paired together, for a deliciously sweet, rich hot chocolatey treat.
Secret Ingredients
The secret to this red velvet hot cocoa mix is in the ingredients. Store-bought red velvet cake mix is what gives the hot cocoa its rich cake-like cocoa flavor, which tastes even more wonderful topped with marshmallows.
Heat Treating
Because the red velvet cake mix is technically raw, it’s important to first heat treat the mix for removal of any harmful bacteria. When boiling water or milk is poured over the cocoa (cake) mix, it’s technically heat treated, but I recommend heat treating at a higher temp, just to be on the safe side. This is easy to do and will only take an additional 5-10 minutes time.
HOW TO TOAST FLOUR/CAKE MIX
- Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment or silpat.
- Evenly spread the flour/cake mix onto the baking sheet.
- Toast in the oven for 5-10 minutes.
- Cool completely before adding to the cocoa mix.
Ingredients Notes
A note about the ingredients. Unfortunately this recipe is not dairy or gluten free, but you could always substitute the ingredients. Try coconut milk powder in place of dry milk powder and a gluten free red velvet cake mix.
