Barbie themed Birthday Party
Our daughter Mila is officially twelve! We celebrated big in May with a very pink, Barbie Movie themed birthday party! After seeing the barbie movie in theaters last July, Mila had her heart set on a Barbie birthday theme and didn’t mind waiting 10 whole months for it come together. As a barbie fan myself, I was thrilled with her theme selection and had so much fun creating it for her. We brainstormed and came up with all the pink and girly details, from balloon garland, to custom barbie desserts, a candy bar, an outdoor barbie movie and a life size barbie box! Check below for barbie inspiration and for all the links to supplies, so you can throw a barbie birthday party too!
Turning twelve
With each new birthday I’m reminded of how quickly the years pass. Although bittersweet, it is such a gift to watch my girls grow older and to have each of their celebrations documented here. Twelve will be a year of new possibilities, discoveries and blessings for Mila, which started with a stunning view of the Northern Lights right from our backyard. A once in a lifetime birthday experience, that has set the tone for a beautiful year ahead and the pink skies were a perfect prelude to her barbie filled day!

Barbie themed Birthday Party
Although about 10 months late to the Barbie party trend, Barbie never goes out of style! We focused on timeless details and desserts that we could incorporate into the celebration, kicking off the party with the Barbie Movie Soundtrack on vinyl. It was so fun to welcome Mila’s friends to the party with “Pink” by Lizzo playing in the background!

Pink truly does go with everything!

Barbie party decorations
And a Barbie party would not be complete without it! From a monochromatic pink balloons, and pink table decor, banner, blooms, bows, taper candles and more. The touches of disco and silver were a festive addition to the decor and a nod to the dance party scene in the Barbie movie.

We also personalized champagne flutes and tackle boxes for glittery pink drinks and a variety of pink candies to choose from while enjoying the Barbie movie!

Although our the movie was originally set to be outdoors, the weather didn’t quite cooperate, so we moved the big screen inside which ended up being just as fun!

Additional party details included, a banner reading” Let’s go party,” beach balls highlighting the beach scene from the movie, a Barbie movie poster with the printed words “Now Showing,” Ken & Barbie Dolls, pink gingham table runners and napkins just like Barbie’s dress, Malibu barbie themed balloons, and hand tied ribbons to barbify our party space.

Hearing Mila and all of her friends singing “I’m just Ken” in unison during the movie was one of the highlights! Just one of many reasons this has been my favorite kids party to plan to date!
Party Blooms
A birthday in May comes with an abundance of beautiful spring blooms to choose from. Since peonies are a favorite, we used peonies, and roses in varied shades of pink to elevate the tables. Other pink flower options for Barbie parties include: carnations, hydrangea, mums, daisies and dahlias.

Tableware
We ordered Malibu barbie themed plates, gingham and hot pink napkins and pink silverware, for a cohesive pink look, that paired perfectly with the desserts.

Barbie Party Desserts
Each year I make a mini cake for our daughter’s birthdays and this has become an annual tradition in our family! This year’s mini cake was a chocolate raspberry cake with coquette style ribbon. Topped with pink and white sprinkles and silver dragees, for the birthday girl!

The remaining desserts I made included barbie cupcakes, barbie sugar cookies with royal icing and one large cake to share!
The cupcakes were topped with pink shades of frosting and barbie themed royal icing transfers.

Sugar cookies have been another birthday tradition in our family! I used simple round, hexagon and heart shaped cutters from the shop to decorate the cookies with royal icing. I incorporated a bit of soft blue into the cookie color scheme to pull in the hues prevalent throughout Barbieland. Then topped the cookies with barbie silhouette icing transfers and finished with piped ruffled edges, similar to that of a vintage cake!

Speaking of vintage cake, Mila actually requested one! A chocolate raspberry cake which ended up being larger than expected once baked! In fact, it was the largest cake I’ve decorated to date and it took a lot of swiss meringue buttercream and a few hours to complete. At least the flavors did not disappoint!

Here’s what the inside looked like!

And one more angle.

The cookies also reminded my girls of their old Barbie Dream-house which was a sweet connection back to their childhood. That’s one thing I love so much about Barbie. All the memories that come along with it.

Just another reason why this theme is so timeless and memorable.

Especially with the addition of the life size barbie box! An affordable and fun photo backdrop and prop for Barbie themes.

Happy 12th birthday to our sweet girl! May it be the very best and most magical year yet!!
