Unicorn Party

It’s hard for me to believe that August is coming to a close. It was a busy month for my family, with end of summer parties and back to school. My youngest started Kindergarten last week and my oldest is now a third grader! Bittersweet for this mama, but I’m hopeful that it’ll be a great year! Adjusting to our new earlier wake up time and overall preparing the kids for their big transition has left me little time to spare, not to mention the fact that my youngest broke her ankle this weekend. All that aside, I’m back and excited to share deets from my oldest daughter’s Unicorn party with you today! We celebrated at the beginning of August with friends and family. A magical day, complete with disco ball dancing and plenty of dreamy unicorn details.

Since I’m a big fan of unicorns, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of planning this celebration. Pink has been our go-to party color for several years, so it was nice to switch things up this time around.

Decor

I fell in love with the purple dahlia blooms and hydrangeas and enjoyed arranging them for our celebration.

Amaia really wanted to have a dance party, so we decorated with disco balls and plenty of shiny gold. Additional party details included one giant unicorn float, festive mylar balloons from the Studio DIY Shop and tons of confetti.

The kid’s portion of the party was earlier in the day and then we invited family back to celebrate with us into the evening. All the girls seemed to gravitate towards the giant unicorn float and also enjoyed the dance off. I was amazed at all the light our a tiny disco ball let off. Unicorn Birthday, Party, Children

The Party Menu

We kept the party menu simple earlier in the day, with pizza, rainbow fruit, homemade unicorn popcorn mix and veggies. My homemade blackberry lemonade that the kids got to garnish with cotton candy went way faster than we anticipated. I didn’t even have the chance to snap a few photos of it. Next time, I’ll make a double batch.

The sweets are always my favorite part! I used custom cutters from the shop to make our unicorn themed sugar cookies, and made unicorn macaron ice cream sandwiches for our second portion of the party. The cupcakes were chocolate and vanilla with 3 vegan frostings for topping. Blackberry, strawberry and lemon vanilla bean. YUM! I made the horns for the cupcakes with rolled fondant, painted in shimmery gold and topped many with cotton candy flavored sour belts to mimic a rainbow.

My daughter’s mini unicorn cake was made the same way, with the addition of fondant for ears. I also made raindrop meringues using Tastemade’s simple recipe.

Party Activities

We used 6 cavity paint palettes with sprinkles for the party guest’s cupcake decorating table. All natural marshmallows, cotton candy sour belts and fondant horns were additional toppings for cupcakes. The kids got to frost and decorate their cupcakes and then we sang happy birthday to our party girl!

After cupcakes, it was piñata time! We filled our piñata with a variety of candies and plenty of glitter. It was hilarious to see glitter and sequins fly everywhere when the piñata broke open. Kind of a pain to clean up, but fitting for our magical party theme nonetheless!

Photo Booth Fun!

Photo booth props came from Wow Wow Meow over on Etsy. The backdrop was easy to put together using white tissue poms as clouds with iridescent shimmery strands for the rainbow inspired background. My sister helped me cut and make all of the props that we attached to sucker sticks.

My sister helped me decorate the unicorn favor bags as well. She drew on eyelashes and dots for the nose, then attached horns that I also printed from Wow Wow Meow.

At the end of the party, each kiddo went home with unicorn inspired tattoos, a unicorn cookie cutter, unicorn horn lollipop, rainbow erasers, bracelets and wikki stix.

What I love most about our parties are the people we get to celebrate with. I can’t wait for my sweetheart to look back on this day, and remember how magical it was turning eight years old.
