Passion Fruit Margaritas
Tart and tropical passion fruit margaritas made with fresh passion fruit, squeezed lime, cointreau and tequila. Garnished with a salted rim and sliced passion fruit, perfect for spring, summer and Cinco de Mayo!
We love a good margarita and I’ve shared many variations over the years, but this passion fruit flavor might be our new favorite! If you’ve yet to try passion fruit, and love tropical drinks, then this cocktail is for you!
What does passion fruit taste like?
Passion fruit is exotic with a distinct tropical fruit flavor, somewhat similar to pineapple. Because it’s also similar to citrus fruits in taste, it is excellent on it’s own or mixed up in a cocktail, like today’s margaritas! The fresh passion fruit compliments the lime juice and cointreau in this drink perfectly, resulting in a bright and balanced margarita with a salted rim.
Can you eat passion fruit seeds?
When you cut into passion fruit, you’ll notice bright orange pulp, juice, and seeds. The seeds are completely edible and filled with antioxidants and vitamins. They also add an eye pleasing element to the cocktail, but if you’re not a fan of the seed texture, simply strain out the pulp and juice from the passion fruit when making the margaritas!
Substitute fresh passion fruit
Depending on your location, fresh passion fruit can be very hard to find. Here in Washington, Whole Foods carries it for only a few weeks in the month of April so if you happened to miss that window, you can substitute fresh, for passionfruit nectar, or quality passion fruit extract/flavoring in this cocktail!
Best tequila for margaritas
The flavor of tequila really makes a difference in the overall taste of this margarita, so I highly recommend using quality Tequila for the best cocktail experience! Patron, Casamigos Respisado and 1800 Silver are my go-tos.
Now it’s time to mix them up and serve!
How to make a passion fruit margarita on the rocks
We prefer margaritas on the rocks but these can be made with blended ice as well, for a frozen variation!
Easy simple syrup
Start by making an easy simple syrup for the margaritas. Heat 1 part sugar to 2 parts water in a pot over medium high heat. Bring to a simmer then allow to boil for 2-3 minutes. Remove syrup from heat and cool completely before mixing the cocktails.
On the rocks
Make ice cube blocks in a silicone square ice mold if you have them on hand. The larger cubed ice is nice because it doesn’t melt as fast and won’t water down your cocktails.
Mixing the margaritas
To mix the margaritas, juice 6 medium limes and transfer to a small glass pitcher. Then cut open 3 passion fruit and pour the pulp and juice into the fresh squeezed lime juice. Mix together until combined. If using passion fruit nectar, add 3 oz of the nectar or a 3 tsp of extract to taste. Rim 3 glasses with fresh lime juice and kosher salt. Place the cubed ice in the glasses and pour the quality tequila over the top of the ice.
Then add the Cointreau or preferred orange liqueur and simple syrup, followed by the passionfruit and lime juice mixture to finish it off. Stir gently, then garnish with slices of fresh passion fruit, salt and lime wheels.
Watch me mix one up below!
Cheers!
