Posh Holiday Gift Picks

The holiday season now upon us and I’m officially in party and shopping mode, feeling ready to prepare for the celebrations and joy this time of year brings! If you’re not feeling the same as of yet, you do have 26 days left to shop!

For those of you who will be attending holiday parties over the next few weeks, or are just looking for special gifts for friends and family, I’ve put together a list of my posh holiday favorites. Did I mention I would love to own all of these items myself? (hint, hint dear husband.) All of them $40 and under, and would make lovely hostess, secret santa gifts, or stocking stuffers for the posh at heart.

2013 Holiday Gift Picks - PLD

It’s really no secret that I love macarons so I had to add this lipgloss from Mor Cosmetics to the list! The Copper cocktail shaker = perfection, as do the glittered holiday coasters from Kate Spade. If ever there were a candle to keep and not burn, it would be the champagne scented candle by Jonathon Adler. The diamond bottle stopper from Z Gallerie is so chic, and disco ball ornaments make and inexpensive seasonal gift. You can never go wrong with a marble cheeseboard, or bottle opener for any hostess you know. The script on the opener reading “Cheers” won me over right away. Lastly, whiskey stones. An affordable unisex gift that entertaining lovers alike will enjoy!

Can you pick a fav?

White Chocolate Peppermint Spoons

Chocolate and peppermint are delicious alone, but when paired together they remind me of Christmas. Cool and creamy, with endless holiday baking possibilities, and a must add to my list of favorite things.

Not only endless baking possibilities, but endless gifting possibilities as well. Like these mouth-watering and festive chocolate spoons I made yesterday, drawing inspiration from a bag of White Chocolate Peppermint M&Ms that was sitting in my pantry. Have you tried them yet? Well let me just say this. If I didn’t have dietary limitations right now I would probably eat the entire bag, but I do, so instead I guess I’ll just save them for gifting and enjoy a cup of vegan peppermint hot cocoa. Not quite the same, but sufficient for now. As a matter of fact these sweet spoons would be delicious in hot cocoa, or coffee, or any other warm holiday beverage, that is if they last that long.

White chocolate peppermint spoons

Supplies/Ingredients

12 wooden spoons

1 box quality white chocolate (I use bakers)

Peppermint oil

1/2 cup White Chocolate Peppermint M&Ms crushed (or regular star bright peppermints if you can’t find M&Ms)

parchment paper

2 ziplock bags

Bakers twine, gift tags and cello bags

20121209-2014471

Instructions

Lay wooden spoons on top of a tray covered with parchment paper. Set aside.

Unwrap white chocolate and melt in a double boiler, or microwave for 30 second intervals.

While chocolate is melting, place M&Ms in a ziplock bag and crush coarsely. Set aside.

Once white chocolate is completely melted, stir in 6 to 8 drops of peppermint oil.

Spoon white chocolate peppermint mixture onto each wood spoon a little below the edge, being certain not to overflow.(Place something under the handle of the spoons so the chocolate can cool without dripping off. I used a plate turned upside down.)

Sprinkle with crushed M&Ms and place in fridge to cool for 1 hour.

Once cool add any excess melted white chocolate to corner of ziplock bag. Snip off the tip and drizzle over the top of each spoon. (optional)

Place back in fridge for another 30 minutes to harden.

package, wrap and decorate poshly and gift them to your loved ones…

or just enjoy them for yourself.

Posh Holiday Gift Guide

December has arrived have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I have quite a long list of to dos so I have yet to start mine, but I have at least had the time to compile a few lists, like this posh little gift guide which includes some chic and affordable finds from many of my favorite stores.

Posh Holiday Gift Guide

Urban outfitters has the most unique and oftentimes comical home and gift section. I just love this “LOVE” ornament and the Macaron Cases with gold trim. What’s better than love and macarons? They go together like hand and glove. For me anyways.

And did you know that Nieman Marcus and Target have teamed up to offer a unique and affordable collection of holiday designer items? The cocktail shaker from Altuzarra is one of my top favorites, and with names like Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch and Proenza Schouler this collection won’t last long.

I adore Philosophy skin products. Have you ever tried them? Actually adore might not be quite the word to describe my love for these. My bathroom is literally filled with shower gels and bubble bath that smells good enough to eat, so perhaps obsession is a better descriptive word. And with holiday selections like Spiced Clementine Toddy…recipes included, that special someone on your list is likely to fall in love with them too.

The In Style Parties book is a perfect gift for that poshista or hostess on your list. I received mine as a housewarming present years ago and that person definitely knew me well! The book includes some fabulous party ideas, guides, recipes and themes that I still reference today.

Other posh gift suggestions. The stunning Jules bottle stopper from Kate Spade, a super fun snow globe salt shaker from Anthropologie, and some vibrant cake knives from Lief shop that would be ideal for cutting that holiday red velvet cake or fruit cake for that matter.

As you can see, I plan to do most of my holiday shopping online this year and I invite you to do the same. No research necessary, just click on the links below to purchase, but be sure to follow the holiday deadlines so you can receive your orders in time for Christmas.

Have you noticed a trend on Posh Little Designs lately? I’m covering my favorite things in a series of crafts, goodies and inspiration all the way up until Christmas so be sure to check back soon!

Red Velvet Hot Cocoa + Cream Cheese Frosting Marshmallows

I have a holiday recipe to share with you that’s inspired by two of my favorite treats. Hot cocoa, and red velvet. Earlier this year I combined the two to create a decadent and delicious cocoa mix perfect for sipping and gifting. And since its been a top rated search topic on Posh Little Designs in the last few months I thought it would be a good time to revisit the old recipe and add a new twist in the form of a cream cheese frosting marshmallow. This is truly a match made in holiday heaven!

Red velvet hot cocoa mix

Red Velvet Hot Cocoa Mix

The secret to this cocoa is the addition of the red velvet cake mix. It adds the richness and red coloring that red velvet cake is so famously known for.

Ingredients~

3/4 Cup Dry Milk Powder

1/4 Cup + 2 tablespoons Natural Unsweetened Hershey’s Bakers Powder

1/2 Cup Powdered Sugar

1/2 Cup Red Velvet Cake Mix (I prefer a quality all natural brand such as Barefoot Contessa)

1 Pint size Mason Jar.

Directions~

Measure each ingredient and layer in mason jar.

Seal and decorate for a holiday gift your friends and family will love.

Notes~

Add an instruction tag to each jar of hot cocoa mix.

For preparation: dump entire jar of hot cocoa into a bowl and mix well.

Add 1/4 cup of blended mix to mug and top with 1 cup boiling water.

For a richer hot cocoa add boiling milk instead of water.

Top with homemade cream cheese frosting marshmallows (recipe follows).

Red Velvet Hot Cocoa

Cream Cheese frosting Marshmallows

The cream cheese adds a subtle tang that will remind you of the frosting on a red velvet cake.

3/4 cup of water divided

3 (.25 ounce) packages unflavored gelatin

3 oz light cream cheese softened

2 cups white sugar

1 dash of vanilla extract

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions~

Line a 9×9 inch baking dish with plastic wrap that’s sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Spray additional piece of plastic wrap to cover the top and set aside.

Place 1/2 cup of water in the bowl of an electric mixer and add gelatin to water to soak.

While gelatin is soaking add remaining 1/4 cup water, and white sugar to sauce pan. Bring mixture to boil over medium heat for 1 minute. Add in softened cream cheese stirring until completely dissolved.

Pour hot sugar and cream cheese mixture into gelatin and beat on high using a whisk attachment. Beat for 12 minutes until mix is fluffy and forms stiff peaks. Add in dash of vanilla extract and mix until combined.

Pour mixture into baking dish using a greased spatula to smooth top. Cover marshmallow mixture with remaining prepared plastic wrap, pressing down lightly to seal.

Allow to rest for 4 hours, or overnight.

When marshmallows have set, mix together cornstarch and powdered sugar in a dish. Using greased knife, or cookie cutter to cut the marshmallows and then dredge lightly in the cornstarch mixture.

If packaging the marshmallows for gifts be certain that they are stored in an airtight container. Keep time is 2 weeks.

Real Parties ~ A Cinderella Birthday Celebration

For the last few years we have allowed our oldest daughter to choose a theme for her birthday celebration and this year she was adamant about having a Cinderella party. With theme in mind, and gathered inspiration, I created my interpretation of a Royal Ball. The day turned out to be nothing short of posh. In fact, just like Cinderella’s glass slipper, it was the perfect fit for our little princess!

All photography, food, decor, centerpieces, party favors, invitations, prints and just about everything else you see here, was done by myself with the assistance of my wonderful family! Such a perfect day filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

I created my daughter’s royal invitations by first photographing her in costume. I then edited them and used Photoshop to add some special touches, which set the tone for her celebration.

Here was the welcome message to guests as they entered the party.

Our color scheme of periwinkle blue and pink was displayed throughout the celebration. I opted for a mix and match of cotton and satin fabrics with bow accents. Decor consisted of glass slippers, fairy wands, a mini coach carriage, pumpkins, tulle, bows and simple rose and carnation centerpieces. I was fortunate enough to find free Cinderella prints from the fabulous Anna & Co. blog, and used them to accent the floral arrangements, dessert table, and Cinderella dress up table.

The labels and banner were created by me with the exception of the cinderella silhouettes and framed print which also came from Anna & Co, and reads “Every now and then, in the middle of our ordinary life, Love gives us a Fairytale.”

Tiara & Rose centerpiece and perfect bow accents.

The Royal Dessert Table was a mix and match fabrics in blue and white, with pink bow accents and bird decals for a finishing touch.

Our sweet menu consisted of Royal Lemon Sugar Cookies. Also on the menu were red velvet cake pops dipped in white chocolate, which I made to resemble white pumpkins, and rustic mini berry pies and turnovers which were made by my wonderful Mother.

The sugar cookies were cut into crown, glass slipper and ball gown shapes and decorated accordingly by my sister and I.

You can find the cookie cutters for your princess party available for purchase in my Etsy Boutique. Just click on the link or the “E” under “my follow and subscribe” section to check them out.

All candy matched our color scheme. We served berry blue jelly bellys, light blue M&Ms, Tiffany Blue Malt Balls, and Blue pearled sixlets, which were meant to look like Cinderella’s original necklace.

For lunch we had a Royal Feast which included Princess Punch (homemade blueberry lime-aid) with optional mix-ins, Cinderella’s caprese skewers, Jaq’s homemade mini mac -n- cheese, mini princess crown pizzas, fairy wand pb&j’s made with a mini star cookie cutter and pretzel stick, veggies, chips and dip, mini turkey burger sliders, Fairy God-mother’s fruit, Your Majesty’s teriyaki meatballs and Masala Chicken Wings.

This is the dress up table I designed using Cinderella’s original dress as inspiration, which included a lovely drawing that my Mom did a wonderful job creating for me as the focal point.

The girls enjoyed playing dress-up with the necklaces, bracelets, rings, mini fairy wands and mini tiaras. The sewing kit, bird accents and original fairy tale print from Anna & Co added the finishing touche.

We added blue and pink tulle bows to add a posh touch to the mini fairy wands.

The sewing kit consisted of odds and ends that I found at Jo-Anne’s.

Table centerpieces and tulle ribbon accents.

Coloring the castle was a hit with our guests. We also setup a table complete with place settings and a crown for decorating.

We searched everywhere for a “pin the tail” style game that would match our party theme but had no luck, so my husband came up with the idea to create our own. We had a colored photograph of my daughter blown up at Costco for $18.00 and I printed off some small tiaras via the internet for our game of Pin the tiara on the princess. This was one of the highlights of the celebration.

My husband and I also made the 2 tier birthday cake, which we decorated and draped in fondant that matched our color scheme. The 1st tier was a chocolate cake with double chocolate buttercream icing, and the 2nd tier was a coconut lemon cake with homemade blackberry swiss meringue buttercream frosting. We topped the cake with a tiara and glass slipper for a posh touch.

Our princess blowing out her candles.

and here she is again super excited for her brand new big girl bike.

Each guest was sent home with a party bag that I made using cinderella silhouette prints, tulle and ribbon. I printed the guests name on each bag and filled them with special goodies, which included my ring pop favors.

Be sure to check back here soon for my diy ring pop favor tutorial.

Happy 3rd Birthday to our beautiful little princess, who never ceases to amaze us and lights up our lives in a way that we never knew possible. We love you to the moon and back plus infinity.

Posh Gifts ~ Washcloth Candy & Push Pops

One of my favorite parts about being invited to a celebration is the gift giving, and any opportunity I have to personalize a gift and make it extra special I will.  Today with personalization on the brain, I created a few more special baby gifts which are available in my Etsy shop. All are inspired by sugary confections.

The first is a 4 piece baby washcloth gift set packaged to look like wrapped hard candy, accompanied by a pink and white chevron treat bag

The second is a 6-piece baby washcloth gift set, packaged in the nostalgic and trendy Push pop containers for a fun finishing touch.

I couldn’t think of a sweeter gift for a new baby!

DIY: Lace Trim Favor Bags

Here is an easy tutorial for the lace trim favor bags we made for my Vintage Glam Baby shower seen here. The idea for them actually came about last minute. We couldn’t find the specific style of favor bag in stores that would tie in with our party theme so we utilized what we had around the house to make our own, following the simple steps below.

Supplies~

Large Brown Paper Bags

Lace Trim paper punch (I used Martha Stewart’s)

Ribbon

Scissors

Hole Punch

DIY Instructions~

Trim about 5 1/2 inches off the top of each paper bag and open.

Using lace paper punch, evenly punch the front side of the bag twice leaving about 1/4 inch between your first and second punch.

Repeat this step for the back of the bag.

Fill with goodies.

Simply seal each bag by hole punching the left and right side, tying them closed with a ribbon bow.

Posh little tip~

These inexpensive DIY bags are perfect for party favors and prizes. Change the color of the ribbon to match your celebration theme.

Yellow Gray & Glam ~ Baby Nursery

In one of my recent posts Sunshine Yellow & Gray, I mentioned my plans to design my daughter’s nursery in that same color scheme. Well after much planning and ordering like a mad woman online it is finally nearing completion! Although I’m not quite ready to share live photos with you yet, they will be coming soon. Right now I’m just waiting on a few final touches to tie everything together, but here’s a sneak peek of the items that have arrived for her Yellow, Gray & Glam nursery.

My ultimate goal in designing the nursery was to make it girly and chic, choosing prints and some glamorous elements to achieve my vision. To avoid having the room be too matchy matchy, I mixed and matched the bedding through custom and clearance orders, thus allowing the budget for favorite items such as the brocade rug and the baby blankets from My Blankee. To me there’s nothing more feminine than ruffles and damask. The gold tufted pouf was a must because…well, I’m a sucker for anything tufted, and the crystal knobs dressed up our existing white baby furniture adding a bit of glam. Lastly, the sunshine prints and owl bank were just too cute to pass up and ended up being the perfect addition to the room.

To finalize the nursery, I’ll be recycling and reusing some of the vintage elements from my upcoming baby shower such as the gold ornate mirrors, crystals and a few birds.

I love that what was only a vision a few months back has turned out exactly as I hoped for. We couldn’t be more excited for our sweet baby M’s arrival!

Note~ Any of the items above would be great gift ideas for expecting Mommies you know. Check out the sources below for links to the sites where I ordered them all.
