One of the first dairy free recipes I ever made was chocolate frosting. More on that momentarily, but first let me give you a little backstory. I’ve had asthma since childhood and also deal with environmental allergies and eczema, so eliminating foods that cause inflammation (like dairy and wheat) from my diet has been of great benefit!
7 years ago it wasn’t as easy to find nut milks, butters and cheeses on the market but we’ve sure come a long way! What I love so much about being dairy free and on an alternative diet in 2019 are the number of vegan and dairy free foods now available to choose from. My youngest daughter also has a dairy allergy so we’ve gotten used to baking and cooking with alternative ingredients.
I find that the biggest concern for people unfamiliar with dairy free foods, is whether or not they’ll taste good, but through much trial and error, and over time, I’ve developed some special vegan recipes that have become go-to’s in our household. Like today’s vegan chocolate frosting which is in my humble opinion the best!
One of my childhood favorite treats was yellow cake with chocolate frosting. After going dairy free I attempted to recreate the delicious fudgy deliciousness that I loved so much as a kid, replacing dairy butter with a blend of organic shortening and vegan butter. The recipe quickly became one of our favorites for cupcakes, cakes and even macarons.
Vegan Chocolate Frosting
In addition to being decadent, the very best thing about the Vegan Chocolate frosting recipe, is that you won’t miss the dairy! It’s rich, chocolatey, lightly sweetened and full of flavor and creaminess with natural ingredients and no hydrogenated oils. Everything that a good chocolate frosting should be!
The vegan frosting is also a great consistency for piping on cupcakes, frosting cakes, or just eating by the spoonful! Don’t worry I won’t judge!
For those of you who are gluten free, this frosting recipe is also gluten free friendly.
How to make Vegan Chocolate Frosting
Making the frosting is easy with a combination of vegan butter and organic shortening as the base. I only use a small portion of vegan butter in this recipe because it has such a distinct flavor that can tend to be overpowering. But what I like about the organic shortening and the reason it’s the main ingredient in this frosting is because it’s super mild and is a great alternative base for any frosting you choose to make!
Pair the shortening and vegan butter with icing sugar, and all natural cocoa powder. You can use a hand mixer or a stand mixer for this quick chocolatey concoction that is guaranteed to be a enjoyed by all who try it!

Why it’s so good!
This frosting is hands down one of the best I’ve ever tried! I think it’s the combination of the creamy base with the rich cocoa powder and sweet icing sugar really makes this chocolate frosting so addictive! It’s not too sweet and has good balance with depth of flavor from the vanilla and salt.
The next time you have cupcakes or a cake to make, I recommend giving it a try so you can see for yourself!
If you enjoy this frosting as much as I do, be sure to add it to your pinterest boards and share with friends and family!
More on the way soon all!
